ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. It is renowned for its excellent education, its cutting-edge fundamental research and its efforts to put new knowledge and innovations directly into practice. Moreover, in 2018 ETH Zurich has been ranked no. 1 in the QS World University Rankings in Earth & Marine Sciences for the fourth time in a row. The
Earth and Planetary Magnetism Group in the Institute of Geophysics of ETH Zurich, seeks to appoint a motivated

PhD student (100%) in Electromagnetic (EM) tomography (sounding) of the Martian mantle
The key objective of the project is to constrain the electrical conductivity of the Martian mantle using magnetic field data from the MGS, MAVEN and especially the InSight mission launched in May 2018. To accomplish the stated objective PhD student is envisaged to implement new methodologies of EM sounding of Mars. Ultimately, the recovered conductivity distribution will be used to make inferences on temperature and composition of the Martian interior, along with estimation of an amount of aqueous phases and partial melt.
We expect a candidate to: a) hold an MSc in Geophysics, physics, applied mathematics, or similar; b) have a solid background and strong interest in mathematical (geo)physics; c) have experience in programming (e.g., Fortran, Matlab, Python); d) be proficient in written and spoken English; e) be motivated to work in an international and interdisciplinary team.
We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: A cover letter including statement of reseach interests, a curriculum vitae, complete course grades and transcripts, a digital copy of your MSc thesis as well as names and addresses of two referees.
