Numerical Modeling for Safety Assessment of Neurostimulation Near Medical Implants Exposed to Low-Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (PhD)

Workplace:
Zurich, Switzerland
Company:
IT'IS Foundation for Research on Information Technologies in Society (IT'IS),

Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. The IT'IS Foundation is an independent non-profit research organization dedicated to improving and advancing the quality of people’s lives through enhancing the safety and quality of emerging electromagnetic (EM) technologies. The Foundation’s primary activities include computational EM in complex environments, computational life sciences (CLS) applied to devices in and around the human body, and the development of medical-image-based high-resolution, computable whole-body anatomical models.
Description:

We are seeking a PhD candidate in numerical modeling to investigate the risk of neurostimulation in proximity of passive/active implants exposed to EM fields in the low-frequency domain generated by e.g., wireless power transfer (WPT) systems and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) gradients. The project involves a careful analysis of the underlying mechanisms of neurostimulation for different exposure conditions, and the identification of computational approaches for its quantification. Specifically, the focus will be on (i) the development and use of coupled EM and neuronal simulations; (ii) the development of electrical models of implant electrodes and electrophysiological realistic nerves/axons; (iii) the use of EM solvers to assess low-frequency (LF) exposure conditions in proximity of implants; (iv) a systematic investigations of different characteristics of LF exposure, electrode geometries, axonal trajectories, nerve models and parameters affecting neurostimulation; and (v) the development of computational approaches for the identification of worst-case scenarios for neurostimulation in proximity of active/passive implants.
